The Isthmus: Kenneth Payne’s vision for a veterans’ shelter in Madison

The February 1, 2013 edition of the Isthmus weekly newspaper featured an article on Kenneth Payne, a Vietnam War veteran and kitchen staff volunteer at the Day Warming Shelter. In an interview with Isthmus reporter, Joe Tarr, Payne describes his first-hand experience with homelessness and the need for a shelter in Madison dedicated to veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“[Payne] was briefly on the streets in December, after being discharged from the VA hospital while waiting on a disability check. He had to spend a few nights at the men’s overnight shelter at Grace Episcopal Church. It horrified him.”
