The Isthmus: A different approach at Porchlight’s homeless day shelter

A new article featuring the Day Warming Shelter can be found in the February 1, 2013 edition of the Isthmus weekly newspaper. Joe Tarr, a reporter for Isthmus, writes about the alternative management style at Porchlight’s new homeless day shelter. He interviewed one of the managers of the shelter, Sarah Gillmore, to discuss their approach to operating, maintaining, and improving the facility.

“The shelter, which serves 125 people a day, operates with the principle of fostering relationships and working together. Meetings are regularly held to discuss anything from the time for a yoga class to how the shelter’s neighbors feel about them. Many people who use the shelter have taken on responsibilities, such as cleaning up trash around the neighborhood, cooking or leading activity groups.”
